PROHIBITION ON THE PURCHASE OF RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY BY NON-CANADIANS ACT

The regulations for the Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act were
announced December 21, 2022 by the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity
and Inclusion. The act and the accompanying regulations came into effect on January 1, 2023.
Since that time CERC has met on several occasions with officials from Minister Hussen’s office, policy
staff within Immigration Refugees Citizenship Canada (IRCC), and policy officials responsible for the
development of the regulations at the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
At each of these meetings CERC has continued to educate government officials about the negative
consequences of this legislation. On March 27, the government announced amendments
to the act.
